129 – Latinx Performance (Rodelo) - New Course! This upper-division seminar will
offer a thematic exploration of Latinx cultural history from the nineteenth century
to the present through the vector of performance. The course has two goals: to show
how Latinxs in and outside of the United States have been constructed as ethno-racial
subjects via attention to the body; and to demonstrate how Black and Brown Latinx
performance practices have influenced and critiqued notions of America. Central to
our work is understanding the historical entanglements between Black, White, Indigenous,
Mestizx and other identities that fall under the rubric of Latinidad. We will study
plays, films, visual culture, and varied archival sources. Critical sources will draw
from performance studies, theatre history, literary criticism, and critical race studies.
Throughout the quarter, students will conduct independent research culminating in
a hybrid research-creative final project based on course themes. No prior knowledge
of Latinx theater or performance required. Please reach out to Prof. Christofer Rodelo
at crodelo@uci.edu if you have any questions.
